Exiting the venue after Shakespeare’s Judgement Day, I felt like I had eaten a jumbo bag of potato chips; I had consumed a lot, but I was still hungry.
This show is about too much and not enough. It’s about the Terminator and the character of Sarah Connor, but it’s also about the actress who played Connor, and it’s about the lack of meaty roles for all actresses, but really it’s mostly about Shakespeare. At the risk of sounding daft, what did I just watch?
The cast was fun and energetic, but overall, it was one of those shows where I felt keenly aware that I was at the theatre, watching a performance. I wasn’t engrossed in a story — rather, I was watching actors in a show that is more or less about acting, with pointed lines like, “I’m banished to the small screen because women’s stories aren’t profitable on the silver screen.”
If you’re a diehard for The Bard, maybe Shakespeare’s Judgement Day is for you. Otherwise, if I may use another food metaphor, it’s like a recipe that calls for a lot of ingredients but never quite comes together.
